Lagos Police Clarify: DJ Commissioner Wysei, Not DJ Switch, Arrested

Recently, the Lagos State Police Command found themselves in a mix-up concerning the alleged arrest of a well-known Nigerian DJ, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch.

In a statement via social media, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified the situation, expressing regret for the confusion. He explained that the individual arrested was actually “DJ Commissioner Wysei,” not DJ Switch. Hundeyin extended apologies to media outlets like Linda Ikeji, BBC, TVC, and DJ Switch for any inconvenience caused.

Reports had circulated claiming DJ Switch’s arrest on Thursday by Nigerian Police operatives. Allegations included charges of obstructing police duties, resisting arrest, and assaulting officers. According to these reports, DJ Switch visited the police station in Elemoro, Ajah, on April 15 to report a fraud case. However, when officers attempted to transport the accused to court, she allegedly obstructed and assaulted a female officer.

DJ Switch gained prominence in 2020 for live-streaming the #EndSARS protests at the Lekki Toll Gate, where protesters faced violence from Nigerian Army personnel.

Responding to the arrest reports, DJ Switch denied the allegations, stating she does not condone violence against the police. She criticized media outlets for spreading false news without proper verification, calling it dangerous and damaging to her reputation. DJ Switch demanded retractions and corrections from those outlets within the day.

Later, she acknowledged the apology from the State Police, expressing acceptance and moving forward.

The incident highlights the importance of responsible journalism and the potential consequences of spreading misinformation.
